Successful communities emphasize the importance of bringing together all members and receiving new members so that everyone has a seat at the table and a chance to find common ground. This creates the fertile soil for people to put down roots and work together as neighbors, and allows welcoming places to successfully navigate challenging times that have the potential to derail a community. Moving beyond ‘us’ vs. ‘them’ thinking requires a proactive approach that builds meaningful contact between diverse community members, engages leaders, and promotes positive messaging that connects to shared values.
